Peculiar Updates

Angels on Elm St.

Posted on Thursday August 22nd, 2013

On September 20, 2013 at 6:30pm we will hold our first formal Fundraising Dinner for City 616 : Angels on Elm St.

Why?

As you know, everything we do here at City 616/Peculiar People is either done by contribution only or as cheaply as we can price the tickets. We do this so that no one is excluded from our events for lack of funds. We host COMMUNITY events here which means we want the entire community to be able to come... not just those who can afford it.

As we have held these events and offered these dinners, concerts, movies and Grubs we find that we lose money on each event. This was fine for the first year or so, but we are now in our 5th year and our coffers have run very low. You might say our nonprofit is in a sequester! Or you might say that our nonprofit is TRULY non-profit!!!!!

WHAT?

Angels on Elm St. is your opportunity to help us through this time and set us up for a successful fall and beyond. This event will include a 4-course dinner with wine pairings. It will also include some of the best entertainment in the Greensboro area. We will have spoken word poetry, music, singing by a variety of performers and drama by Charlie & Ruth Jones. This promises to be a great event and lots of fun. You will also get an update on the latest happenings at City 616. Plus you will be given an opportunity to contribute even more tax-deductable dollars to a wonderful cause.

One more time... Why?

So glad you asked. Not only does City 616 need your partnership but you may not be aware of some of the things we do and the things we have planned. As you know, monthly we host a community dinner called Greensboro Grub. The Grub is one of the most unique events in state or even the nation. An evening of community with people from all walks of life, backgrounds, and beliefs.   One Grub guest, on his first visit, nudged his partner and said, "This type of thing doesn't happen in Greensboro, NC - New York or San Francisco maybe... but not Greensboro." And it's true. The Grub is totally exceptional and extraordinary. This alone is worthy of much support to make sure it survives AND stays the same.

Another thing we do is sponsor concerts in our space. Musicians from all over the nation have been here to perform. We usually charge for these events but all the money collected is given to the artists involved. (We know what it is like to be "starving artists.")

For local artists we host an event called "Stew and Stories." This is where we have local artists in for a meal. After the meal we have a local historian tell us stories of Greensboro. The goal is to have the artists collaborate and in a few years we hope to offer a "Greensboro Celebration Weekend." Various artists of many mediums and disciplnes will make this a true celebration of where we are, where we live, work and make our home.

"Soup & Spirit" is our time for the community to come together for watching a movie!! We serve soups of various kinds and then settle in to watch a movie. After the movie we discuss the key points and the spiritual implications. It is a very deep and satisfying experience.

Not to mention the theatrical peformances put on throughout the year.  Things like pilgrim, Victorian Christmas, and All That Jazz.

Again, for most of these events we charge nothing, just a suggested donation. We want the whole community able to attend. So we depend on others to help us out with the associated costs of these events.
