An Opportunity to
Meet Others & Feel Da Love

For those of you who don't know about Greensboro Grub (formerly called Supper Club)... this is an event we started in TN to give us a sense of community and stability because we spent so much time traveling with our touring theatre company. (We have traveled 1.2 million road miles in 20 years and estimate at least 6½ - 7 years in motel rooms.) I cook for a hobby, so we decided that on those weeks we were home, we would invite neighbors, friends and acquaintances over for some wine, food and camaraderie.

Since moving to Greensboro we have used this format to meet others, to help others meet new friends and to bring a sense of community to the downtown area. Each one of these events have more magical than the one before. We have been astounded by the wonder of it all.

We invite 30-40 to our 4000 sq. ft. apartment (which was once the Craven Hotel in the early 1900's). We put four 10 ft. tables down the 71' hallway and have a banquet. After a sumptuous dinner we move into the Great Room where we share gifts of words and talents.

Bring Your Talent to the Table!

Since we are in love with WORDS, we ask guests to bring a story, a section of prose or a poem or two to read to others. While this is strongly encouraged... it is not a requirement... the only requirement is to come, enjoy and be yourself. After dinner we "retire" (fancy word for "carry your folding chair to the next room") to another room where we listen to the magic of words and to each other. Words are such a gift and give us the stuff of life... of joy... of presence. We have tended to lose that in today's society. But if WORDS are not your thing and you still want to participate we would strongly encourage any talent you would like to give us. This is a community... we want to include all aspects of Art and life... prose, poetry, music, song, dance, bird watching, bridge spittin' — whatever.

And don't let the plague of professionalism infect you to the point where you feel like you can't come and contribute. One of our favorite quotes comes from G. K. Chesterton who said, "If a thing is worth doing... it is worth doing badly!" He goes on to lament how so many of us have forsaken art, painting, dancing or singing because we were afraid we could not do it "good enough." We have a kindergarten attitude at the Grub.

Remember? Remember when the teacher brought paints to class? Remember how excited and joy-filled you were? You could not wait until you could get you hands on a brush and start slinging the paint!! You didn't worry if your painting was "good" or "bad" -- you just went for it and reveled in the joy of doing something creative. C'mon... you need the Grub.

A few details: We experimented in TN and we decided that Grubs work best when it is adults only.  We don't hate kids but we found that parents are so much more relaxed and able to talk when not attending to children running in and out of the room etc.

We have to limit the number of people at the Grubs. So please let us know of your ability to attend ASAP. If you are not able to attend this Greensboro Grub, I will keep you on the invitation list unless you write to be taken off. No worries. It will not be taken personally.  I will have an e-mail Group we invite everytime. Once on the list, I won't take your name off the list unless you write me at: mygrub@earthlink.net and let me know.

Also people have asked if there is anything to bring. We never turn away beverages of any sort: soft drinks, tea, wine, beer, whatever. We can always serve it again later. Otherwise, I do the cooking as my hobby and enjoy "doing it all."  (And a bag or two of ice would be appreciated... but call ahead... 20 bags of ice is not appreciated... Ha! Ha!)
